When the word “feminist” is thrown around, it seems that the most hyperbolic of stereotyped imagery is what comes to mind for many men and women alike.
For example, when I was growing up in a Conservative Republican household, I was led to believe that feminists were bra burning, man hating, fetus-killing lesbians whose passionate cause was mainly to figuratively- and perhaps, even literally - squish the testicles of all male counterparts. Sadly, I didn’t learn any different until my 20s, when I went to college and took a Women’s History course. Coming from the era of 1990s Girl Power - or “Girl Powah” as coined by the Spice Girls - I was really psyched up to learn about how to be an independent up-and-coming woman of my generation.
However, I still had it all wrong. At that point, I had not realized how ingrained in society it still was that women are treated with a double standard in most areas of life. From the media sending mixed messages about what she should look like, to reality television portraying women to be dumb and materialistic, I would argue that women are portrayed as overly emotional, unintelligent, and over-sexualized
